Emergency Preparedness

Wisconsin’s Public Health Emergency Preparedness Program focuses on preparing for and responding to events that pose a substantial risk to the health of the state’s residents. Different types of emergencies (i.e., weather-related emergencies and disease outbreaks) require different responses. The Forest County Health Department collaborates with local partners to develop plans of action and a system for communication during emergencies. Collaboration with local partners is essential in preparing for and responding effectively to different public health emergencies.

Emergencies can happen at any time. Are you prepared?

1. Build a kit.

Start with thinking of basic survival – fresh water, food, safety, warmth, sanitation, clean air. Your kit should include enough supplies to get you through three (3) days following a natural disaster, health, or man-made emergency.

2. Make a plan.

Each person’s needs and abilities are unique, but every individual can take important steps to prepare for all kinds of emergencies and put plans in place.

    • Establish a place to meet with your family, friends, or neighbors in the event of an emergency.
    • Establish a way to communicate with your family if you are not together during an emergency.
    • For seniors, it is important to create a support network around you and consider any additional supplies, medications, etc. that you might need.

3. Be informed.

Be sure to watch or listen to local news channels. Check local county websites for updates, and stay informed through social media outlets, like Facebook. Consider purchasing a NOAA Weather Radio. A NOAA Weather Radio is a 24-hour source of weather forecasts, watches, warnings, and non-weather emergency information provided by the National Weather Service.
